A one-time Minister of Technical Education, Dr. Asuquo James Okono has passed on at the age of seventy.
The late Dr. Okono who hailed from Ibakang Nsit, Nsit Atai Local Government Area died on the 26th OF March, 2016.
A statement by his eldest son, Aniekan Okono indicates that before his appointment as a Minister in the botched second term administration of Alhaji Shehu Shagari in October 1983, Dr. Okono held many academic and administrative appointments within and outside Nigeria.
An Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering in William Peterson State College in the United States of America, the late Dr. Okono was between 1979 and 1983 the Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Polytechnic now CRUTECH Calabar, Chairman, Board of Directors, Calabar Cement Company in 1980, Member Governing Council of the Polytechnic, Calabar and Chairman of private companies including Relkon Engineering and Marketing Company Limited as well as NATAIK Company, Calabar.
While studying in the United States, he was the President, International Students Association, NewArk College of Engineering, New Jersey.
As a lecturer in the Polytechnic, Calabar, the late former Minister was the President of the Polytechnic Senior Staff Association between 1981 and 1982.
The late Dr. Asuquo James Okono was listed in Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges, 1972.
