Commissioner for Environment expresses intention to begin House to House collection of wastes in notable housing estates within the Uyo metropolis

House to House collection of wastes in notable housing estates within the Uyo metropolis will begin from October 1, 2016.

The exercise which is a pilot scheme is to be implemented throughout the state thereafter.

The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Imobong Essien in an interview with AKBC news said that the exercise will begin in Itiam/Eniong/Ewet Housing Estate, Osung Ama, Mobil/Shelter Afrique, Ebiye Haven and Akwa Ima Estates.

He explained that the receptacles will be removed from these Estates while houses will be equipped with waste bags by the Ministry of Environment at the first instance while occupants of such houses will subsequently provide the waste bags.

The Commissioner said that wastes will be evacuated on designated days, adding; that it will run for two months to determine its effectiveness for operation state wide.

On the relocation of the refuse dump in the state capital, the Commissioner explained that government is studying various proposals before it on the establishment of Waste Recycling Plants

He said that various private investors have approached the state on the matter, pointing out; that wastes generation will soon be an income venture.

The Commissioner for Environment advised residents of the estates, where the pilot scheme will be in operation to cooperate with government in the interest of all.
