Nigerians have been asked to rise and defend the unique identity and re-enact the culture of peace and unity that gained the nation self independence.
The State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio made the call yesterday in his address at the fifty fourth independence anniversary of Nigeria marked with match past by school children and
uniformed organizations at the Uyo township stadium.
The Governor who saluted Nigerians for the celebration urged leaders at all levels to remain beckons of unity and also continue to support the transformational programmes of the Federal Government.
Chief Akpabio said in Akwa Ibom the people were not only celebrating the victory of the founding fathers, but rebuilding the foundation of the nation which was started by the forebears.
He stated further that the celebration was to conduct self audit, and recommit self to the ideas of nationhood and to declare that even though the nation was staggered by the storm
perpetuated by. insurgents, Nigerians must as a people unite and rescue the nation from the clutches of the insurgents.
The Governor challenged the youths of Akwa Ibom to own the future and support the elders and also breakdown the walls of ethnicity, tribalism and build bridges of love.
According to the Governor, it is only in the atmosphere of peace that they can continue to show direction to the rest of the Country.
The governor paid special tribute to the Women in the State who stood by him since the inception of his administration.
While calling for prayers for the success of President Goodluck’s administration, chief Akpabio said the Federal government’s policies were legendary.
He identified the unbundling of the power sector, the cashless policy, improvement in Agriculture, roads, education among the achievements of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Governor Akpabio recounted that for thirty years Nigeria was being denied democracy and by implication, denied the vehicle that would have developed the nation.
The Secretary to the State government, Mr. Udom Emmanuel in a vote of thanks as the Chairman central planning Committee for the Anniversary celebration commended the people of the State for turning out enmasse for the event.
He explained that the mammoth crowd showed they acknowledged the development stride of Governor Akpabio as a great leader whose legacies would remain memorable for the State.
Mr. Emmanuel thanked President Jonathan for surmounting the challenges in the Country and making Nigerians to come out and celebrate the unity of the Country at fifty four.
