The Wife of the State Governor, Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel has rekindled hope and put smiles on the faces of over three hundred widows from all the wards in the state with the presentation cash and gifts.
Speaking at the event which held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, the Governor’s wife said that though the United Nations declared the 23rd of June every year as the International Widow’s Day, the celebration had to be held in September to enable her settle in her new office.
Mrs. Emmanuel said the empowerment scheme became necessary as she understood what it means to raise children in one parent families and charged the widows not to be deterred by their present situation, rather to encourage themselves by holding unto God.
The Governor’s wife advised the beneficiaries to invest what was presented to them and to use the proceeds to cater for their children.
She enlightened them on the rights of widows and to report any case of obnoxious practice towards them to the Ministry of Women Affairs for prompt action.
A widow in a brief exhortation titled “God is a husband to the widows” encouraged other widows not to give up on themselves as God will play the role of a husband and father to their children.
A widow, Mrs. Ekaette Brownson on behalf of others expressed gratitude to the Governor’s Wife and pledged to use the funds judiciously.
