The Commissioner for Economic Development, Dr. Emmanuel Onwioduokit has re-echoed the resolve of the State Government to partner donor agencies through prompt release of counterpart funds for the development of the state.
The Commissioner gave the assurance when a team from the European Union Niger Delta Support Programme (Water and Sanitation Component) led by its Team Leader Albert Achten paid him a courtesy visit.
Dr. Onwioduokit said the five point agenda of the Udom Emmanuel administration were targeted at transforming the fortunes of the state and its citizenry and promised to do everything possible to key into laudable programmes offered by development partners.
While commending the Niger Delta Support Programme of the European Union, particularly, the water and sanitation component, Dr. Onwioduokit noted that improving the quality of water in the state would help reduce the number of visits and cost of hospital bills as most diseases, according to him were water borne.
The Team Leader, Niger Delta Support Programme Water and Sanitation Component, Mr. Albert Achten said he was in the state to brief newly appointed officials on the status of the EU Programme and appealed to the State Government to release its thirty percent counterpart funding to enable them commence the programme in Akwa Ibom.
Mr. Achten who stated that the EU is providing seventy percent funding for the Water and Sanitation Programme, however disclosed that November 2015, would mark the deadline for signing of the contract with the state.
He said the first phase of the programme would comprise capacity building, while plans were underway for provision of infrastructure.
He informed the Commissioner of a stakeholders meeting billed for the State and expressed optimism that the meeting would help the state to fast track the process of the release of its counterpart funds.
